Wait, Shouldn’t There Be A Wall There?

October 24

Speaking of posts getting removed…

This old porch column was discovered inside the walls of the pantry and back porch area. When I was a little girl, this is the type of columns that were on the front porch. When they started cracking, somebody replaced them with those skinny boards I hated.

Oh no. Oh no. Oh no no no no no. Rot in the walls! This is the wall behind the bathtub. I would question my memory of the location if it weren’t in a pic down below.

So yeah, where did my wall go? You know, the one that’s the outside wall of the house? Peep that bathtub sitting on bricks! I mean you know let’s just build the floor to right beneath the corner of it and use bricks for the other side. I’m not sure when the bathtub was originally installed, but it worked for all these years. It never moved!

See, there’s the rotten wall.

Imagine that! A hole in some of the only floor I have left. Par for the course!

I don’t know who this man is. I think he wandered up to the job and they put him to work. 🤣 Kidding! It’s Larry working on getting the bathtub out of the now non-existent wall.

I’m just going to lay it all out here, you don’t want Abbie to bathe you, when you were a child. She scrubbed all the dang skin off and I mean scrubbed like you have never been scrubbed in your life. That wash rag, as she called it was like a Brillo pad to the skin. It’s a bath you would never forget.i remember her helping me at bath time only once. I remember begging my mom not to ever let her bathe me again. I bet that’s the most squeaky clean I’ve ever been.

This is by far my most favorite between the walls/under the house find. We aren’t sure if it belonged to Viola or Clara, but either way it has a place in my house. .

Some wall appears to be missing. That was enclosed, yesterday.

The column has made its way out of the wall. Whatever shall we do with that thing? Hmmm…

Holy Smokes! No wonder the back porch felt like you were walking downhill. There’s no way whoever built this thought it was level. We’re going to go with settling caused that over the years. Maybe it really did, but it looks like it was built that way. I’ll have to ask the guys their thoughts on this. Keep in mind, I came home from work, most days and walked through the chaos without a tour guide so some of this is me guessing.

Another view of the wall-less, floor-less back porch

The pantry or what’s left of it

The guys are really good at saving anything they think will be of value to my family. They found this and the next board in the pantry back porch area. It’s worn over time, but this looks like Carl. Our thoughts are it’s C.B. and it was used to keep up with their height. That’s just a guess based on the lines drawn on the next board.

It’s just so hard to make out the writing, but if I’m not mistaken we kept these boards.
